U.S. EXPLORING EXPEDITION: the USS Vincennes (Lt. Charles Wilkes cdg; SF Bay & Sacramento survey under Lt. Cadwalader Ringgold) lay at Sausalito 14 Aug - 1 Nov 1841; Ringgold's party ran the boats up the Sacramento to ~39°N, Lt. Emmons's party came overland from Oregon. Wilkes openly weighed U.S. acquisition of San Francisco Bay - the American strategic assessment on the eve of conquest.
- Published primary source: Charles Wilkes, Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition ... 1838-1842 (Philadelphia, 1844 4to / 1845 8vo), vol. V

Sources disagree: survey executed largely by Ringgold; Wilkes personally in CA only ~19 Oct-1 Nov 1841
