THE ONLY FOREIGN ATTACK ON SPANISH CALIFORNIA: Hipolito Bouchard's insurgent frigate La Argentina (38-44 guns) with the corvette Santa Rosa (2nd = Peter Corney) sacked and burned Monterey 20-27 Nov 1818 under the flag of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata; then raided the Ortega rancho at Refugio (2 Dec), parleyed a prisoner-exchange at Santa Barbara (6-9 Dec), and touched San Juan Capistrano (14-16 Dec). Gov. Sola evacuated inland; Monterey rebuilt by spring 1819.
