1818-09 · Monterey
port-call alta warship arrived
DATE CORRECTED: the Russian navy sloop Kamchatka (Golovnin; artist Tikhanov) was at Monterey/Bodega in SEPTEMBER 1818 (sighted Bodega 21 Sept; at Hawaii 19 Oct) - met RAC director Hagemeister; Golovnin's narrative later advanced the Russian claim of no Spanish population north of SF. The 1818-10-05 date was Sola's REPORT to the Viceroy, not the port-call.
- Archival source: AGI, Californias, leg. 8, Exp. 3, ff. 71-75v: Sola to Viceroy N.168, 5 Oct 1818
- Secondary attestation: Golovnin's published narrative (Around the World on the Kamchatka, trans. 1979)
Sources disagree: 1818-10-05 = Sola's AGI report date, NOT the arrival; ship at Monterey/Bodega Sept 1818. Golovnin's 'no Spanish north of SF' = a territorial claim, not a census
