BEECHEY'S SURVEY: HMS Blossom (Capt. F. W. Beechey; naturalist Alexander Collie, Lt. Edward Belcher) anchored SF 6 Nov 1826, ran a careful hydrographic survey of San Francisco Bay, then Monterey (sailed 5 Jan 1827). The most evenly accurate published observations of any visitor to Mexican California to that date; nearly the sole source for Echeandia's partial-emancipation experiment.

Second visit: Beechey's Blossom returned to Monterey 29 Oct - 17 Dec 1827 (then SF for water; sailed for San Blas 3 Jan 1828). The Arctic-support mission (rendezvous with Franklin/Parry) made California a wintering stop; the resulting books are a first-rank source.
